SIMI VALLEY — Armani Garcia threw a no-hitter Thursday. That was just enough for the Santa Ynez softball team to get through to the second round.

Garcia struck out 11 and made an unearned run in the second inning stand up as the Pirates edged Simi Valley Grace Brethren 1-0 at Grace Brethren in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 Playoffs.

"We were slated to lose this game," said Santa Ynez coach Denicia Gills. "Their pitcher (that they used Thursday), Jessie Fontes, was their ace. She had pitched 100 innings and had something like 200 strikeouts."

Gill said, "We were slated to lose this game. This was big for our team. Big."

Maxpreps ranks Grace Brethren (14-5) 179th in the state and rates Santa Ynez (13-6-2) 411th.

Santa Ynez had just one hit itself Thursday, a Molly Kadlec single, but the Pirates broke through for an unearned run against Fontes in the second.

Michaela Baker reached second base on a two-base error on what Gills described as a hard-hit ground ball. Baker stole third base then scored on an error by the third baseman.

Santa Ynez overcame two errors. Gills said Garcia walked no one.

"How a team (deals with) errors in a game like this is big, and our girls overcame them," said Gills.

The Pirates won for the second time in the playoffs. They defeated El Monte Arroyo 10-3 Tuesday in a wild card game at Arroyo.

The 2017 Division 7 runners-up will play at Riverside North at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in the second round. North (20-7) defeated Yucca Valley (14-2) 19-4 in the first round Thursday.
