“Based on the recent statements issued by Governor (Gavin) Newsom and State Superintendent of Instruction Tony Thurmond, regarding schools turning to distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) does not see an avenue for the spring sports season to continue," CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti said Friday.

We are hitting the rewind button to look back at St. Joseph's historic run to a CIF State championship in 2011. The Knights girls basketball team rebounded from a tough loss in the Southern Section final to run through the state playoffs. Things got interesting for St. Joseph on March 12, 2011 in a CIF State semifinal game against Orange Lutheran. We take a look  back at that game, then we'll look at St. Joseph's revenge game against Serra and then, ultimately, the State title game vs. Bishop O'Dowd.

After schools statewide closed in March, so did all team workouts. So Dulay has developed a solo workout routine — well, not exactly solo. Her father, Santa Maria Reds president Rob Dulay, hits ground balls to her off the hitting tee — of her own.

"Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are my usual workout days," said Rianna.

Colter Knight, the son of veteran Righetti High School water polo coach Rob Knight, was a driver and captain for a Righetti team that made a CIF Southern Sectional divisional final in 2013 and 2014, Colter Knight's senior year.

He continued his water polo career at UC Davis. Since then, he has followed his wine making career around the world.

As a child in Manila, Callado wrote that he "wasn't exposed to high speed internet, cellphones, video games or any social media platforms. All I had was the company of my friends." The activity with his friends included running.

He immediately took to running when he came to Fairlawn Elementary in Santa Maria. "I was on the fourth, fifth and sixth grade track teams at Fairlawn," Callado said.

“My athletic director (Claudia Terrones) saw that. She pulled me into her office and talked to me.”

Simmons said she had two conversations with Terrones “and the one we had before my senior year, the second one, helped me turn the corner.”

She said those discussions helped her to shift her outlook from an ideal of perfection, which she could never achieve, to “live for me,” Simmons wrote in the essay.
