The area is lacking in junior high athletics. Now how can that change? Justin Bronson has some answers.
Santa Maria Valley high schools offer upwards of 22 sports, though the junior highs might have no more than six. "I think that a lot of people get used to the situation or the circumstances they grew up in, or just what's existed over time," Bronson says. "When I look at Santa Maria, and I've been at Righetti now for 10 years, there's just so much potential. Not to say there's not a lot of great things going on, but there's potential for things to become even larger, if you will. There's so many more opportunities."
"Babe Ruth parents, players, coaches and managers, I'm sorry to report that the board has made the decision to officially cancel this season," the league announced on Facebook Thursday. "With the uncertainty of where we are at, we believe we have no other choice. The board will be meeting next Thursday, July 2nd at 6:00 to discuss refunds and moving forward for next year.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, California governor Gavin Newsom issued a shelter-in-place directive in March. Restrictions have gradually eased, and golf courses were among the first area mass-use facilities that re-opened to the public.
"They, as the governing body, are encouraging and leaving it up to the local districts and leagues to restart seasons and have interleague end-of-season tournaments as allowed by local and state mandates," District 65 said in a message to the Times.
